Terms of use

Particularly the part about what a calculator can and cannot tell you.

Last updated 12 October 2026

The important one

StepCalc produces dimensions for design purposes. It is not a substitute for a permit set, a structural engineer, or the judgement of a competent builder, and it does not know the code in force where you are building. Verify every figure against the code adopted by your local authority before you cut material or build anything. You are responsible for what you build.

What this site is

A set of free calculators and reference material about staircases, operated by InfoTilt, Inc. No account is required to use the calculators and no fee is charged. A free account lets you save projects; you can delete it, and everything saved with it, at any time from My account.

Accuracy

The formulas are standard and we test them, but we make no warranty that any result is correct for your situation, complete, or current. Building codes change, are adopted at different times in different places, and are amended locally. The code figures on this site were checked in October 2026 and are summaries, not the code text.

If you find an error, please tell us. We would rather fix it than defend it.

Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, InfoTilt, Inc. is not liable for any loss, damage, cost or injury arising from use of this site or reliance on anything it produces. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

Advertising

The site carries advertising, which pays for it. Advertisements are labelled and are not endorsements. We have no control over what is advertised and no relationship with the advertisers.

Acceptable use

Use the calculators as much as you like, including commercially. Do not scrape the site at a rate that degrades it for others, and do not republish the reference content as your own.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New Jersey, United States.
